Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some of the questions that I’m often asked by my family, friends and the people I meet whilst out and about. If you have any questions, then just e-mail me and I’ll be happy to reply.

Why did you start your YouTube Channel? It all started during the first Covid-19 lockdown of 2020. I was furloughed from work and needed to find something to keep my mind active, instead of being idle watching Netflix! I wanted to start another Colchester history project and had a look on YouTube for some inspiration. YouTube offered a selection of videos which matched my search. One of them was a video which I made several years ago, so I accessed my old YouTube account and the rest, as they say is history.

What equipment do you use? I used to use my mobile phone, which was fine for short clips, but had some issues in Luxembourg and Trieste with the amount of video clips I needed to film. I now use a GoPro Hero 9, and by using multiple SD cards, the whole process is so much easier.

What editing software do you use? I use Filmora and have a subscription to Filmstocks as well.

Where do you get your music from? I have a subscription to Epidemic Sound.

What has been your favourite place to visit so far?  If I'm honest, it was Nuremberg in Germany. I visited back in 2018 had had an amazing week exploring the streets and learning about the town's history. Sadly, I wasn't making videos back then, so only recorded a few video clips, most of which became lost. I intend to return again and video my travels there, along with other locations in Bavaria.

There are so many travel channels on YouTube, why do you think that yours will succeed? Simply because I'm different. Unlike other channels, I do have considerable historic knowledge, especially in certain areas. I do like the Roman period of history for example, so I'm able to deliver an informative travel video incorporating my historic knowledge.

What ae your plans going forward? I’ve spent the past few years creating content for my two channels, as well as structuring a business around my new website. The big plan is to reduce the hours I work at my salaried job to concentrate more on video production, perhaps with a view of doing this full time. However, this may be easier said than done, so would probably look to find a balance between full time work and my two channels. I also would like to spend more time writing books and developing my photography further also.

Would you like to make ‘YouTube’ your full time job one day? That would be nice, but that is easier said than done. Probably best to find a balance between a salaried position and my YouTube work.
